Malawi to receive $115m from Global Fund

The Global Fund on HIV and Aids has released over K49 billion ($115 million) to Malawi to guarantee treatment of people living with HIV/Aids up to 2015.
Speaking at a press conference in preparation for this year’s World Aids Day which falls on December 1 each year, Unaids country coordinator Amakobe Sande said: “I would like to inform the whole country that Malawi will not miss out on the global fund allocations, those fears are unfounded.
“In fact we have very good news to announce on behalf of government, I am very pleased that the proposal that Malawi submitted for $115 million was successful and the Global Fund has released to fund Malawi’s treatment programs without any interruptions up to 2015.”
Principal Secretary for Nutrition, HIV and Aids in the Office of the President and Cabinet Edith Mkawa, applauded the role that donors and other development partners play in supporting Malawi in the fight against HIV.
“As government we are aware that there are many players in this fight and we are also aware of the numerous support we get from various development partners” she said, adding:
“I would like to assure all players, particularly donors, that that government will continue to ensure effective and transparent use of all resources allocated to HIV and Aids interventions,” added Mkawa.—Mana
